World Meteorological Day reflects the date of the formation of the World Meteorological Organisation, a specialised agency of the UN, in 1950.
Covering some 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean is a major driver of the world’s weather and climate. Today also marks the launch of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
